Here are my Top 5 singles released throughout 2021 from a range of artists, some that I have been a fan of for a while and some very recent. Make sure to go and check out some more of their music after reading this and let me know what you think!

1: ‘Nah It Ain’t The Same’ — Greentea Peng

‘Nah It Ain’t The Same (Official Video)’ — Greentea Peng

I am a huge fan of Greentea Peng’s music, ‘Downers’ was the first song I ever heard by Greentea Peng back in 2019, which was co-written with Owen Cutts (another artist I love he is a producer and writer, who released his debut album ‘Carriage 8’ in 2020, there are some amazing samples and beats on there!).

The song is a hybrid of Jazz and soul, the double bass, piano and drum licks contributing to the Jazz style. The keyboard playing an organ riff accompanied by Greentea Peng’s vocals add in the soul. The introduction to the song with the double bass and Greentea’s soulful vocals is my favorite part of the song, they perfectly accompany each other Greentea’s mellow husky vocals mirroring the sound of the double bass. The music video to this song is also one of my favourites from this year, the visuals are all very aesthetically pleasing, and naturistic as you spend a day in the life of Greentea Peng.

2: ‘Weakness’ — Poppy Ajudha

‘Weakness (Official Video)’ — Poppy Ajudha

I have been a fan of Poppy Ajudha for a while now, her previous song’s lyrics inspire discussion and reflection. ‘Weakness’ begins with an intricate guitar riff, with harmonizing humming, the beat drops and the song transforms and is instantly uplifting. ‘Weakness’ is a love song, where Ajudha sings about the division between satisfaction, lust and losing control. The song will be one I will be carrying through summer 2021 with me.

The music video which Poppy directed features exotic and vibrant graphics, dancing and four iconic costume changes. Overall, the video is a great addition for the song. Creating excitement for when gigs start up again, because Ajudha, is a great entertainer!

3: ‘Does it Make You Feel Good’ — Joesef (stripped back)

‘Does it Make You Feel Good? Stripped (Official Visualiser)’ — Joesef

As you likely already know, I love everything about Joesef’s music, I have previously written a blog talking about his EP ‘Does it Make You Feel Good’ the link is here if you want to go give that a read. Though I love all of his music, this one stands out to me the most. It is a stripped back and acoustic version of his song ‘Does it Make You Feel Good?’. It is a raw song and allows you to focus on the lyrics and story behind the song even more.

4: ‘Hungover’ — Eloise

‘Hungover (Official Video)’ — Eloise

This is the first song I ever heard from Eloise, but since then I have listened to her previous music and am a huge fan! The song starts slowly with Eloise humming, then the beat drops and the song has adopted a very contemporary twist. The song is one I have had on repeat when studying, running and just looking for general motivation. The song is focused on the debate she is having with herself about whether or not she is over her past relationship.

5: ‘Closure (acoustic)’— Mychelle

‘Closure (Acoustic)’ — Mychelle

I only discovered Mychelle recently when I came across her new EP ‘Closure’, similarly to Joesef’s song, Mychelle had an acoustic version of ‘Closure’ on her Spotify. The acoustic version of the song allows her to demonstrate the power of her voice, grabbing all of your attention to her and her guitar, her voice mellow and smooth, serenading you. It is the perfect song to listen to when reflecting and relaxing.
